FIDM Guest Lecture
I was asked to give a guest lecture on marketing to a Men’s Apparel class at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (fidm.edu) in Los Angeles.
To be transparent, I know absolutely nothing about design, so I was a bit surprised they thought I had something valuable to share. It turns out one of the Professors listened to a podcast I was on and asked for me to speak about marketing. (Lesson: Share content, the internet is an amazing place)
Most of these students are working on apparel brands that will launch via direct-to-consumer. The DTC world is evolving incredibly fast. What worked 2 years ago to generate demand isn’t the same as today and so forth. However, there are marketing basics that I believe will continue to be the foundation across any industry. Since these students are getting started I decided to share a foundation to build on - Marketing 1st Principles.
The deck is below, here are the cliff notes:
The best form of marketing is Word of Mouth
WoM sharing is generated by having a great product worth talking about
Creating a great product market fit requires talking to customers & iterating
The best brands have a story - their why.
